Technical highlights

TERRASEM double disc coulters 'Dual-Disc'

The large sized DUAL-DISCs push trash aside without hairpinning harvest residues into the soil. In combination with the coulter tube mounted inside, this system achieves a uniform, exact seed placement.

Each coulter is mounted on an independent parallelogram to ensure excellent ground tracking.
All the disc coulters are guided by coulter press wheels to ensure uniform seed depth.
Seed depth is adjusted centrally and coulter pressure is adjusted hydraulically between 88 and 265 lbs / 40 and 120 kg.
Maintenance-free mounting of the coulters via rubber dampers also provides optimum freedom of movement.
Thanks to the off set confi guration, a row spacing of 4 .92” / 125 mm is possible for an optimum plant distribution pattern.

Double disc coulters are guided by wide press wheels.

TERRASEM Metering system

TERRASEM C3 to C9 as standard specification are equipped for tractors with ISOBUS. The seed wheel is electronically driven, distance measurement is by radar sensor or tractor signal.

Two levels of operator terminal can be provided if the tractor is not equipped with ISOBUS.

The R3 to C6 models have one metering system and the C8 and C9 have two.

The metering wheels for normal or fi ne seed can be changed quickly and easily to match seed flow rate.
A reduction gear ensures that the metering wheel is always operating in the ideal speed range.

The seed wheel is electronically driven and controlled from the tractor via a radar sensor or an ISOBUS signal.
Infi nitely variable adjustment of seed quantity from 0.52 to 312 lbs per acre or from 0.6 kg to 350 kg per hectare from the tractor.
Automatic engagement of seed metering wheel with priming to ensure immediate metering.
Easy calibration with a practical collection bag and the calibration fl ap is monitored by sensors.
An outlet slide allows all the seed to be discharged from the hopper when emptying.

Fan and distributor heads

A high volume of air and low air velocity protect the seed against damage and prevent rubbing off of the dressing. Together with the precision metering system and large distributor heads, this system delivers uniform seed grain placement, guaranteeing you a reliable harvest and financial success.

The oversized fan is driven hydraulically and delivers a high volume of air in the mid-speed range, so there is little noise during operation.
The high air volume means the fan speed can fl uctuate without aff ecting the accuracy of seed metering.
The R3 / R4 / C4 / C6 models have one distributor head with a maximum of 48 outlets, the C8 / C9 have two with 32 / 35 outlets each. The seed is fed to the distributor head evenly via the riser tube for optimum distribution to the individual rows. The large diameter distributor head guarantees ideal distribution to the individual rows.

TERRASEM C4

A servo motor shuts off the tramlines electronically. Valves on the distributor shut off up to 3 seed rows for each tramline. The excess seed is returned to the riser tube and the seed fl ow rate is reduced accordingly, achieving seed savings of up to 6%.
If desired, seed fl ow monitoring is available with an optical sensor for each individual row. The system is triggered if the fl ow rate (grains/second) falls below theset rate. The operator terminal indicates which row is blocked.
On the TERRASEM C8 and C9, both distributor heads are automatically hydraulically retracted during the folding sequence.

Earl de Vulder relies on Pöttinger TERRASEM
He was impressed by the advantages the seed drill has to offer

The farm belonging to Gaëtan de Vulder is located in northeast France close to the border with Belgium. He uses a Pöttinger TERRASEM C4 artis plus mulch seed drill. On his 150 hectare (ha) farm he grows wheat (90 ha), peas (25 ha) and oilseed rape (30 ha).

He was impressed by the wide range of advantages the TERRASEM C4 has to offer:

You only need two passes with a stubble cultivator before sowing peas.
With wheat we sometimes only need a single pass, drilling together with a cultivator, and the rest can be drilled directly following rape.

He is pleased to report on his experience so far: „I noticed that even after only one pass with the cultivator the drilling quality remained consistent, and so did yield. As a result I have decided to drill all my wheat directly after the rape crop next year.“

The TERRASEM operates at an average speed of 13 kph, so you cover around 3 ha in this time.

„What I really enjoy about this machine is that it is so easy to operate using the control terminal; its easy to set up with easy access for calibrating and emptying the seed hopper. When I buy my next machine I will gladly place my trust in Pöttinger again. I haven't regretted my choice.“ says Gaëtan de Vulder.

Pöttinger mulch seed drills: now with direct fertilisation

Pöttinger adds a further innovation to its TERRASEM series of mulch seed drills: direct fertilisation. Using direct fertilisation technology enables micro and macro nutrients to be placed at the same time as the seed grain. Optimum growth conditions are created during the early phase of seed growth as a result, increasing the potential performance of the crop.

Fertilizer can be applied on the TERRASEM using two different methods: through a row of Dual-Disc Exakt coulters, or via a broadcast system using spreader plates. The Dual-Disc Exakt coulter method involves placing fertilizer between each double seed row using the coulters mounted behind the compact harrow unit integrated into the TERRASEM seed drill. The fertiliser placement depth can be adjusted independently of cultivating and sowing depths. The surface is then consolidated across the whole working width before the seed is drilled. The Dual-Disc Exakt coulter thus places a deposit of fertiliser in a perfect position to nourish the roots of the seed. Not only does this save fertiliser and minimise unproductive losses, it also promotes faster development of the root mass and contributes long-term to optimum yield.

The broadcast method involves distributing fertiliser across the full working width of the compact harrow so that it is thoroughly mixed in to the soil. The fertiliser is applied virtually loss-free without overlaps or gaps. As a result the roots of the seed find nutrients at all levels. An additional advantage of direct fertilisation is that in difficult ground conditions only one pass is necessary, providing maximum protection of the soil. Plus, there is the advantage of being able to complete the full drilling and fertilising process quickly and effectively in a single pass as soon as an opportunity presents itself.

The decision whether - or which method of - direct fertilisation should be applied depends mainly on the structure of the soil, the crop and the precipitation patterns in each region. Pöttinger fully supports the trend in direct fertilisation: in the face of increasing fertiliser prices, new types of fertiliser, new fertiliser regulations and environmental legislation, it pays to employ precision fertiliser management in future. With two methods of applying direct fertilisation, Pöttinger TERRASEM mulch seed drills offer the right process for a wide range of individual needs and operating conditions.

TERRASEM is successful in Ukraine
Seed rape grows well following drill demo 2011

Pöttinger Ukraine has done a seed drill demo to start drilling winter oilseed rape: beautiful weather, good seed material, excellent technology, experienced and dedicated employees. The rapeseed was drilled at nine farms in the key oilseed rape growing areas of Khmelnitskyj, Kiev, Cherkasy, Poltava and Kharkov. The TERRASEM C6 seed drill was used for the demo. We started drilling on 8 August and finished work on 24 August. The selected farms will be able to assess the operating quality of the TERRASEM C6 while drilling rapeseed.

The objective of the demonstration is to provide customers with more than just theoretical information about Pöttinger seed drill technology; the main thing is to demonstrate the practical advantages. Farms have a perfect opportunity to test the working quality, performance and process costs of the seed drill – after all, it's your own experience that really counts.

The drilling process was performed in fields with a range of operating conditions. The fields were prepared in various ways before drilling, and direct drilling was also used. The seed placement depth was set at 1.5 - 2 cm with a row spacing of 12.5 cm. Seed volume was 4.5 kg/ha on average. The first shoots appeared 5–7 days after drilling. We have already received the first positive feedback on the working quality of the TERRASEM and very much look forward to finding out how the demo-drilled fields develop. We will report back to you in one or two months.

TERRASEM adapts to the ground
Mulch drilling technology from Pöttinger offers customised solution

When choosing seed drill technology, factors such as ecology (e.g. protection of the ground) and economy play an increasing role. In addition, very dry drilling conditions like in spring this year make precise seed placement especially important. These demands can be met by using mulch drilling as an alternative to conventional tillage. Pöttinger has investigated ground protection in detail and offers a customized solution with the latest TERRASEM technology.

TERRASEM with huge downward flexibility
The packer follows each contour of the ground. This guides the side frames and seed drill over undulations in the ground. The range of adaptation is unlimited upwards and up to 5 degrees of negative movement downwards, maintaining a constant work pressure all the time. The side elements are preloaded using nitrogen accumulators to provide equal pressure distribution over the whole working width. At the same time the leading disc tools are guided over ground contours by the trailed packer roller. The benefits are clear to see:

precision adjustment of working depth
no working out of damp earth guarantees homogenous seedbed
uniform working in of residues
power peaks are avoided for smooth and continuous operation in the field

On firm ground with packer chassis
The special feature of the TERRASEM is its compact, manoeuvrable construction combined with its unique packer tyre system. The packer wheels are mounted on individual bearings and enable an extremely tight turning radius in the field. Despite the different speeds between the inner and outer wheels on corners, the soil remains level and there is no smearing. At the same time, all wheels are in contact with the ground at the headland.
